- Ask your council for a housing payment Councils can help with a deposit, rent in advance or moving costs through the Crisis and Resilience Fund. You don't have to pay it back.
- Rent deposit, bond and guarantee schemes Shelter explains local deposit schemes, guarantors and interest-free loans.
- Find a local help-to-rent scheme Crisis keeps a database of schemes that help people into private renting.
- Universal Credit Budgeting Advance An interest-free loan from Universal Credit for one-off costs like moving or furniture.
- Budgeting Loans Interest-free loans if you've been on certain older benefits for 6 months.
Furniture and essentials
- Find low-cost furniture and appliances Reuse Network charities provide affordable beds, sofas, cookers and washing machines.
- Search for charity grants Turn2us lists grants for furniture, white goods and other essentials.
- Emergency help from your council The Crisis and Resilience Fund can help with essential items, food and bills.
Cheaper bills
- Broadband and phone social tariffs Cheaper broadband from £10 a month if you get Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits.
- Warm Home Discount Money off your electricity bill once the account is in your name.
- Help with water bills The Consumer Council for Water explains social tariffs and bill caps. Ask your water company too.
